Devan primarily defends insurance claims covering all aspects of general insurance liability, including motor vehicle accidents, long term disability, occupiers’ liability, slip and falls, and employment practices claims.
He has a particular interest in the intersection of the contractual, statutory and common law obligations of parties in long-term disability and employment practice liability claims.
His practice also includes providing employment related legal advice to both employers and employees in the context of contract negotiations, evaluation of termination clauses, and assessment of exposure to wrongful dismissal claims. He co-authored a paper on the enforceability of restrictive covenants that was included in a leading employment law textbook, The Law of Dismissal in Canada.
Devan has participated in all stages of litigation files, including trials, both in personal injury and defamation claims. He has represented his clients at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the Ontario Small Claims Court, the Financial Services Commission of Ontario, and the Licence Appeal Tribunal of Ontario.
